Orangetree THINKING
Choosing a System
For years choosing a system for your business was essentially about picking the closest match to your requirements from a small range of choices. Often two, maybe three systems would dominate a sector.
Oh, we loved to pretend it was better than that! But in fact, system implementations were a chorus of groanings as the company creaked and tensioned to fit the new system.
Trust me. I was there.
Now a new system is never going to be entirely pain free, but what if it brought with it a deeper insight into your business performance? What if it enabled better interaction with your customers? What if it was simple and intuitive to use? What if it actually began to have a positive effect on the running of the business?
Before building a system, we need to ensure we understand the customer's business. Then we need to stop calling it a system, and start thinking about solutions.
That, you see, is the vital bit of system design. Whether installing an OrangeTree system, or project managing a third party installation, I want to see the business benefit. But remember what a business is. It is people. Staff must benefit. Management must benefit. Customers must benefit.
Is this too romantic? No. It is a tough challenge, but it is not impossible.
Have your say!
